Hughes Persevered
Hughes texted me “ Thanks for teaching me Bio in 2019. By the way I got A2” Hughes was a student referred to me when he was in Sec 4. We were left with only 10 months to iron out his problems. It takes time to build a relationship and to nurture students. Hence, I would usually take in students at a younger age such as Secondary One or Two. Biology was his least favourite subject at that point in time as his results were poor. The main issues were on data analysis and answering techniques. It was disheartening to receive a score of 0 when he had written a paragraph of 6 sentences. By the time it was prelims, the score he could achieve was a C5. Hughes did not lose faith, nor did he give up. With repeated reenforcement on answering technique, improvement was observed. He wrote in a more structured manner. Next, he had to remember his key words. As Singapore’s O level Biology exam drew near, we went through the syllabus on what was important to take note for each chapter. The target score was B3 or B4 one month before the exam. He took the last leap forward, never wavered and persevered. Yes! It was an impressive achievement for Hughes, so can you!
